The 2011 Annual World Conference on Carbon (Carbon 2011), co-hosted by ICCCAS, the East China University of Science and Technology, and the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, was held in Shanghai, China on July 25-29,2011.

Nearly 1000 attendees from 45 countries/regions took part in the conference, and more than 800 papers were accepted for presentation, including 5 plenary lectures, 44 keynote lectures, 283 oral presentations, and 485 posters. With a theme of “nice carbon , nice life”, those papers cover 10 hot topics, namely, graphenes, nanocarbon, carbon for energy storage and conversion, porous carbon and its adsorption, carbon fiber and its composites, precursor-carbonization-graphitization, computation and modeling, bio-carbon and its safety, novel experimental techniques and characterization, bulk carbon and its industrial applications. The plenary lectures were delivered by Prof. Klaus Müllen, known as the father of nano-graphite synthesis, Prof. Isao Mochida of Japan, Prof. Ljubisa R Radovic of America, Prof. Fan Shoushan, academician of China and Dr. Hubert Jäger of Germany.

On the conference, nearly 30 scientists who have made outstanding contribution to the world’s carbon science won awards, such as Peter A. Thrower Award, Utz-Hellmuth Felcht Award, and the GFEC Award, etc. The 2011 Peter A. Thrower Award was presented to Prof. Michio Inagakiof Aichi University.
