In Feb 2015, phenolic fiber technology, developed by ICC, was awarded the first prize of science and technology innovation by the Commission of Science and Technology for National Defense Industry(CSTNDI) of Shanxi province.
This technology has solved the technical difficulties of fiber forming of phenolic resin with low molecular weight, and realized a technological breakthrough in improving the flexibility of the brittle phenolic fibers. Process design and system integration for pilot preparation of phenolic fiber were finished, and qualified phenolic fiber products that meet users’ requirements were prepared successfully. The user evaluation showed that the composite prepared by phenolic fiber has obvious advantage in light-weight and high efficiency heat insulation. And the thermal protection layer can meet the technical index requirements in performance and has been put into practical application.
Moreover, phenolic fiber can also find applications in civil fields, such as flame retardant, heat insulation, corrosion resistance, etc. Meanwhile, activated carbon fibers prepared by phenolic fibers also have broad application prospects in the field of super capacitor electrode materials. The phenolic fiber technology is expected to play a certain role in promoting China’s economic and social development.
