Dr. Yitian Fang, staff research scientist (professorate) and doctoral supervisor, was born in 1968. He graduated from Taiyuan University of Technology in 1990 with a BS degree. He then continued his education at the Institute of Coal Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (ICC) from 1991 to 1997, receiving his master's degree in chemical engineering and Ph. D. degree in organic chemistry. From January 1998 on, he worked in ICC, mainly engaged in the basic research and engineering development of fluidized-bed gasification technology and related technologies. He has built a complete set of industrialized technologies, e.g. pressurized fluidized-bed gasification process and key equipment, which laid the theoretical and technical foundation for solving the gasification of a large number of inferior coal in China.

He served as a member of the expert group of the Ministry of science and technology's "10th Five-Year Plan", "11th Five-Year Plan", "12th Five-Year Plan", the National 863 program, and the national key science and technology project (clean coal project). He is also a member of the energy committee of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, executive director of the 39th and 40th councils of Chinese Society of Chemical Engineering; member of National Technical Committee for professional standardization; chief editorial board member of "Coal Transformation", editorial board member of "Journal of Fuel Chemistry", and editorial board member of "Coal Chemical Industry".

In 2003, he won the "Young Chemistry Award" of the Chinese Chemical Society, In 2010, he won the model worker of Shanxi Province. In 2011, he won the special government allowance of the State Council. In 2012, he won the "science and technology contribution award" of Shanxi Province. In 2014, he was selected in the talent plan of the Ministry of science and technology. In 2015, he was selected in the fourth batch of academic and technical leaders of Shanxi Province. In 2016, he was selected in the national special support plan, and in 2019, he was selected as the high-end leading talent of the "Three Jin Talents" support plan of Shanxi Province. It has won the second prize of scientific and technological progress of Shanxi Province, the first prize of scientific and technological progress of the national energy administration, and the second prize of scientific and technological progress of the Chinese Particle Society.

He has served as deputy director of energy and environment engineering laboratory, director of coal gasification Engineering Research Center, and assistant director and deputy director of ICC. In July 2019, he served as the director of ICC.
